Course Description (for SIS)

Entrepreneurial Finance STS2840

 

This course will explore finance issues for entrepreneurs and early stage companies in different industries, including high tech startups.   Students will learn the basic concepts of finance in the context of small and startup businesses.

 

Through lectures, cases, in-class discussion and guest speakers, the students will learn how to analyze a Small Business/Startup’s finance situation and their financing options.  The class will culminate in a team/group project/presentation that demonstrates the concepts they have learned during the semester.  

 

Learn basic financial terminology and tools  (how to use/apply)

Understand the different financing options (Debt/Equity)

      And financial intermediaries (Angel/VC/PE)

Learn how to evaluate a Startup/SME investment opportunity

Be able to understand/prepare a financial section of a investment pitch deck

 

Prior finance or accounting class/experience is helpful, but not required.

Texts: (Required) 1) Finance for Non-Financial Managers, Gene Siciliano, McGraw Hill ISBN 978-0-07-182436-1.  (Not available at the UVa Bookstore... but available on Amazon and other book selling sites... older Kindle edition is only $8.73 on Amazon).   Beware, there are many books with the same title, they are all different.  2) A Case pack is also required for the class and will be available for purchase from the UVA Bookstore near the start of the semester.   

Optional recommended texts: 1) Smart Financial Management, Sihler, Crawford & Davis, AMACOM ISBN 978-0-8144-0789-9; 2) Venture Deals: Be Smarter Than Your Lawyer and Venture Capitalist, Brad Feld, WILEY ISBN: 9781118443613 (2nd edition) or 978-1119259756(3rd edition).
