Course Description (for SIS)

<!--StartFragment-->This class will focus on local cohomology modules over a commutative ring. Local cohomology was introduced by Grothendieck in the 1960s. Since then, it has been an object of intense study and research. Local cohomology detects several properties of a ring, such as dimension, depth, Cohen-Macaulayness and Gorensteiness. In addition, local cohomology has connections with topology, combinatorics and algebraic geometry. In particular, local cohomology has been used to study singularities of an algebraic variety.<!--EndFragment-->
