Course Description (for SIS)

  • “All Things Fitzgerald” is an interdisciplinary class designed to situate American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald within the culture of the Jazz Age. We will seek to discover why Fitzgerald is considered an iconic, representative figure of the Roaring 20s. We will learn why it is impossible to understand modern-day American identity without understanding the themes about which Fitzgerald writes. We will look at gender and race, money and sex, all through the lens of some of Fitzgerald’s works. We will be reading “The Great Gatsby,” along with “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and several other of Fitzgerald’s famous short stories.
