Course Description (for SIS)

This course is designed to be an introduction to the history of psychology. Because many of the issues currently debated in psychology were initially raised by philosophers centuries ago, the course will trace the development of psychological ideas among philosophers from the early Greeks to the 20th century, and then cover the emergence of psychology as a distinct discipline in the late 19th century and its development to the current time. After completing the course students should have a broad knowledge of the roots of contemporary psychology, an understanding of the contributions of major people in the history of psychology, and a greater appreciation of the importance of the discipline of psychology in human society.
