Course Description (for SIS)

CS6501 -- The Computational Planet

Much of the worlds processes and infrastructure are becoming computerized and, as such, an increasing number of society's greatest challenges are falling within the purview of Computer Science. Creating energy-efficient buildings, safe and fast transportation, and growing crops or raising livestock now require a computational approach.

What computational tools, approaches, sensors and systems must be created for the computational planet?  In this course, we will explore several application domains that force us to rethink the fundamental principles of computing. We will review and critique a sampling of projects in each domain, as well as explore brand new ideas and ways to test them.
