Course Description

This course will examine the various definitions of citizenship, political engagement, activism, and social change as they are related to current issues at the University. The course will touch on topics such as: current context, problems, and issues in higher education, the history of social and student movements, the relationship of institutional avenues with activist methods of change. It will look at these topics within the context of the University of Virginia, examining the history of student movements at UVA, the governance structure of UVa, and current approaches to citizenship training at the University. A central part of the course will be an action research project in which students examine current efforts at activism and change.
