Course Description (for SIS)

This class introduces key theories and current theoretical trends in urban design.  The field of urban design is an interesting stepchild of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture, born at a moment of social unrest and highly influenced by social scientists.  It often serves as the interface between questions of aesthetics and the social, but can also be a tool of large-scale real estate development.  In this class we will examine the roots of urban design as a field and a practice, familiarize ourselves with the theoretical underpinnings and central elements of urban design, and explore contemporary debates over the role and nature of urban design practice.  In addition, we will practice analytical skills inspired by our topics, exploring and analyzing urban spaces and patterns in words and drawings.
