Course Description (for SIS)

This course explores those attitudes toward death, dying, and the afterlife that characterize different East Asian ritual and cultural practices. Through a selection of theoretical reading, ethnographic studies, and documentaries, it wishes to help students develop a rich and detailed picture of the bond between the living and the dead in East Asia, think critically about the nature of this link, and recognize the broader networks of relationship that death-related practices mediate.
