Class Title:  Great Modern Poetry and Poetics

Class Description:  The title says it all.  We will read the great English-language poetry of the twentieth-and twenty-first centuries, including Walt Whitman, Emily Dickenson, T.S. Eliot, e.e. cummings, Wallace Stevens, Amiri Baraka, Allen Ginsberg, and many others. Students will choose about half the poets and poems at the first meeting on June 3 2014.

Learning Outcomes: Students will learn as much as possible in one course about the great English-language poetry from Walt Whitman through the present.

Assessment Components:  Mid-term examination, final examination, journal-keeping, active engagement with readings, faithful attendance, active participation

Assignments: A detailed syllabus will be handed out at the first class meeting on June 3 2014.  All readings are from the required text(s) named above.

Grading:  Student participation, collaboration and journal maintenance, one-half; mid-term examination, one-fourth, final examination, one-fourth.  Both examinations will be open-book take-home exercises with no time constraints other than a one-week turnaround time.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Instructors establish attendance and participation requirements for each of their courses. Class requirements, regardless of delivery mode, are not waived due to a student's absence from class. Instructors will require students to make up any missed coursework and may deny credit to any student whose absences are excessive. 

 

SPECIAL NOTE:  Attendance at first meeting on June 3 2014 is required for admission to course unless waived by instructor by pre-arrangement.
