Course Syllabus – Fall 2014

Instructor Bio:
Virginia Moran has a BA and an MA in English from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. She has published essays and short stories widely in journals, magazines, and online including Virginia Quarterly Review, salon.com, Oxford American, and many others. Her novel, The Algebra of Snow, was published in 2012. She teaches fiction and memoir writing at JMU and U.Va., coaches writers, and is a certified Martha Beck life coach. She is also in training as a Kaizen Muse creativity coach. For many years, she served as the associate director of the U.Va. Women’s Center and editor of Iris magazine. SIS Course Description: Provides the tools, knowledge, and guidance necessary to navigate the book publishing process. Includes a detailed overview of the publishing industry, both traditional and self-published.
Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
By completing this course, students will:
- Gain valuable insight to the knowledge and skills required to successfully publish a book.
- Be able to discuss the pros and cons of various publishing options including commercial publishing, academic press publishing, and self-publishing.
- Understand how to take advantage of the Internet and social media in publishing and marketing a book.
