Neuroscience of Social Relationships: Brain, Body, and Ecology

For this (largely experimental) course, we’ll discuss the neural and ecological bases of human relationships, including relationships between strangers, friends, romantic partners, and among kin. We'll talk about the basic building blocks of relationships--things like cooperation, shared intensions and goals, the nature of the self and "the other," Attachment Theory, Inclusive Fitness, and all the sequelae of social relationships for health, well being, and effort. The main goals of this course are to provide an introduction to the theoretical, practical, methodological and inferential challenges shaping what is still a very young domain of inquiry, and to acquaint students with a representative sampling of contemporary research into the structural, physiological, functional neuroanatomical and neuroendocrinological correlates and substrates of human social relationships.
