Course Description (for SIS)

In this seminar, participants examine slavery and human trafficking (both in historical and current manifestations) and their legacies through the lens of Liberation Theology, especially as expressed in Black, Womanist, and U.S. Latino/a Christian theological conversations. Beginning with an overview of Liberation Theology’s themes, methods, and Latin American Catholic origins, the course studies slavery in relation to Christian doctrine—especially theological anthropology, Trinitarian theology, Christology, soteriology, theological aesthetics—and crucial ethical issues, including racism, labor ethics, food ethics, global economic ethics, environmental ethics, and bioethics.
